Construction on the Mississippi Plaza building at Harrison and 2nd streets will cause some inconvenience to drivers for the next couple of weeks.

Beginning today and continuing through Oct. 3, the westbound lane of 2nd Street will be closed between Harrison and Main streets as workers move in a big crane to install the large and heavy pre-cast concrete panels of the building's south façade. The pedestrian walkway also will be closed.

Only the eastbound lane of 2nd street will be open to traffic.

When completed, Mississippi Plaza, being built by Ryan Companies/Design Build Associates, will become the new headquarters for Lee Enterprises, which publishes the QUAD-CITY TIMES and 43 other daily newspapers, and RSM McGladrey, a business services firm. The companies will occupy four of the six floors; the other two floors are available to other tenants.

Despite some early, weather-related delays in construction, Greg Lundgren, the president of Design Build Associates, has said the Mississippi Plaza project is ahead of schedule.

When completed, the building will have created about 130 construction jobs, of which about 115 will have been filled by local workers, he added.
