Charlotte teen named Clinton County fair queen

CLINTON, Iowa — Melissa Spain, 17, of Charlotte was selected out of six contestants to be the 2006 Clinton County Fair queen.

She’s the daughter of Bill and Chris Spain and is a senior at Northeast High School.

Princess was Samantha Kennedy, 18, of Long Grove, daughter of Patrick and Carrie Kennedy. She’s a 2006 graduate of Central Community High School.

First runner-up was Meghan Henningsen, 16, daughter of Greg and Joleen Henningsen. She’s a sophomore at Central Community High School.

People’s Choice winner was Samantha Burke, 16, of DeWitt, daughter of Matt and Sue Burke. She’s a sophomore at Central Community High School.

The candidates decorated containers at the county fair. Fair-goers dropped in $1 to pick the people’s choice. Burke will get a portion of the money from the votes collected.

Other contestants were Kathy Brown, 18, of Clinton and Hannah Kinrade, 17 of Maquoketa.

The contestants were judged July 14, and the winner was announced Thursday night.
