Area poets published in Lyrical Iowa 2006
The Iowa Poetry Association announced winners of the association’s 61st annual contest and names of others to be published in Lyrical Iowa 2006.
These local poets will be included in anthology:

Demolay honors organization leaders
The Legion of Honor, the highest honor conferred by the International Supreme Council, Order of DeMolay, for outstanding leadership to youth and community, was awarded to Matt Buckley, state executive officer, Iowa DeMolay, and Robert Durrett, advisory council chairman, Scott County Chapter, at the State Summerfest in Cedar Rapids.
DeMolay is a fraternal youth organization for young men ages 12 to 21, developing civic awareness, personal responsibility and leadership skills. For more information, visit the Iowa DeMolay Web site at www.iowademolay.org.
Clerks complete professional training
Theresa Ralfs, city clerk, Riverdale, Iowa, and Diane Frandsen, finance clerk, Maquoketa, Iowa, completed the final courses at the Iowa Municipal Clerks Institute that lead to professional certification. The five-day Municipal Clerks Institute was conducted in Ames by Iowa State University Extension.
These area residents attended the three-day Municipal Clerks Academy in Ames: Ann Schmidt, Blue Grass; Lynn McGarry, Charlotte; Deb Minar, Clarence; Julie Heindel, Columbus Junction; Jackie Holecek, Davenport; LeAnn McCallister, Delmar; Denise Benson, Eldridge; Marilyn Galloway, Grand Mound; Sheryl Sullivan, Preston; Lorna Fletcher, Tipton; and Janet Boorn, Wilton.
Student receives drama achievement award
Brigid Kelley, Davenport, received the drama alumni award at Clarke College, Dubuque, Iowa.
The award was established by Clarke College alumni to encourage the continuance of a quality theatre program.
The award is presented to an outstanding sophomore or junior who has demonstrated academic excellence and superior creative involvement in the drama program.
University of Dubuque presents awards
These students received awards from the University of Dubuque, Dubuque, Iowa:
Jenelle Vega, daughter of Janette Schorg, Davenport, and Lee Vega, Cedar Rapids, received the 2005-06 National Collegiate Minority Leadership Award for high standards of achievement, dependability and leadership.
Kenneth Martin, son of Kenneth and Dorothy Martin, Rock Island, received the 2005-06 Benjamin Elijah Mays Student Leadership Award in recognition of leadership in campus activities and commitment to promote cultural understanding.
Brooke Whitlow, daughter of Todd and Nancy Whitlow, Davenport, was inducted into the Phi Delta Kappa honor society for professional educators.
Health worker receives conference scholarship
Sherran Russell, Clinton, Iowa, was selected to receive a scholarship to attend the Iowa Caregivers Association’s annual conference in West Des Moines.
“Kick-Off to Quality Care: First and Tend” offered topics of interest to certified nurse assistants, home health aides, patient care technicians, personal assistants, family caregivers and other direct care workers. More than 350 direct care workers from across Iowa attended the event.
Flutist selected for national ensemble
Quad-City musician Karen McClintock was selected by taped audition to perform at her seventh consecutive National Flute Association Convention with the Professional Flute Choir. The 28-member choir performed in Pittsburgh.
McClintock has been an active solo artist in the Quad-Cities for many years, as well as performing with the Quad-City Wind Ensemble, Quad-City Music Guild and Grace Notes Flute Quartet.
Q-C quilter accepted in regional contest
Rosalie Baker, Davenport, had a quilt titled “Goodbye My Butterflies” accepted in the Quilt Expo quilt contest Sept. 14-16 in Madison, Wis.
The juried and judged 10-category quilt contest was part of the three-day Quilt Expo event presented by Wisconsin Public Television and public television’s Sewing With Nancy.
Student named to leadership organization
Alexis Hayman, Davenport, was recognized as a member of Sigma Alpha Lambda national leadership and honors organization at the University of Kansas.
Sigma Alpha Lambda is a national organization dedicated to promoting academic achievement and providing members with opportunities for community service, personal development and professional fulfillment.
Q-C student attends Naval Academy program
Collin Bickford, son of James and Lori Bickford, Davenport, was one of 1,800 top high school students from across the country taking part in the U.S. Naval Academy’s week-long summer seminar in Annapolis, Md.
The program introduces students to academy life through a regimen of academics, physical training, intramural sports, sailing and seamanship, as well as leadership training and social activities.
Bickford is a senior at Davenport West High School.
Students selected for business seminar
Brian Oliger, Davenport, and Grant Schultz, Bettendorf, were among eight University of Northern Iowa students selected to attend the first Okoboji Entrepreneurial Institute July 30-Aug. 4 at the Iowa Lakeside Laboratory on West Lake Okoboji.
The students attended the institute with 16 students from the University of Iowa and Iowa State University. The group participated in the advanced study of entrepreneurship, including seminars with successful business leaders and networking to enhance their understanding of opportunities in Iowa.
College students receive awards
Valparaiso University, Valparaiso, Ind., announced these student awards:
Brent Whitlock, Bettendorf, was awarded the Outstanding Senior Award from the Department of Communication. He is the son of Dennis Whitlock and Debrah Kirby.
Kate Swank, Coal Valley, Ill., was inducted into the Accounting Honor Society. She is the daughter of Thomas and Lisa Swank.
Student pro-life essays featured in magazine
Fifteen Alleman High School students from the religion class of Sister M. Anastasia Maher had excepts from their essays on pro-life published in the Pentecost 2006 issue of Voices magazine.
Students wrote a two-page essay on the topic of pro-life and reasons for their opinions. The top essays were submitted to the magazine for the Young Writer’s Award. The students donated the $100 award to the Student Hunger Drive.
Voices is a magazine printed by Women for Faith and Family, a non-profit organization dedicated to upholding the teachings of the Catholic Church. The students’ work is available online at www.wf-f.org.
Librarian receives state certification
Angie Hammond, of the Davenport Public Library, completed requirements for public librarian certification.
The purpose of the certification program is to improve library service for Iowans by developing the skills of public library staff members.
The program is voluntary. To receive certification, individuals must meet work experience and educational requirements. Certificates are valid for three years.
JROTC cadets excel at leadership camp
The Army junior Reserve Officer Training Corps Blue Devil Battalion held its annual summer leadership camp in August at Camp Dodge, Iowa.
Twenty-six cadets from Davenport West and Davenport Central high schools participated.
Sky Pogue, from Davenport West, was named the camp’s top cadet. Ryan Murphy, Felicia Gillespie, Rebecca Smet and Ryan Wilson, all from Davenport Central, were recognized for their outstanding effort. Rebecca Smet is the new Blue Devil Battalion commander.
The cadets participated in rappelling, land navigation, leadership reaction course, team building activities, cadet challenge physical fitness test and other activities.
Physical therapists achieve certification
Kathryn Ellsworth, Christine Klemish and Jay Richard, all physical therapists at Genesis Medical Center, have been designated certified orthopaedic clinical specialists by the American Physical Therapy Association.
To receive certification, a physical therapist must pass a national examination after working in the field for one year or completing a minimum of 2,000 hours in the specialty area.
There currently are 41 orthopaedic clinical specialists in Iowa.
WalMart donates to community organizations
Davenport WalMart 1241 associates presented $9,000 in community grants to Quad-City organizations. Organizations receiving grants were:
American Red Cross, for medical and housing assistance in times of disasters; Friends of Iowa Court Appointed Special Advocates Program, for advocates appointed to assist teens during their court appearances; Gildaís Club, to assist families dealing with cancer; Illinois Press Foundation, Partners in Literacy, to put newspapers in classrooms; March of Dimes, to help persons with disabilities with therapy and medical equipment; Buffalo Bill Museum, LeClaire, Iowa, to assist the public museum that houses historic memorabilia.
Teachers named to National Honor Roll
Margaret Stock, Davenport, and Deborah Hall, DeWitt, Iowa, were accepted as members of National Honor Rollís Outstanding American Teachers for 2005-06.
Stock, who retired in 2006 after 40 years, taught first grade at Harrison Elementary School. She was nominated by Jessica Denney, a former student.
Hall teaches English and language arts at Davenport West High School.
Black Hawk students honored at banquet
Allyson Gish, LaCasta Britt, Joni Harden and Valerie Paxton, all of Kewanee, Ill.; Erin Atkinson, Galva, Ill., and Briana Smith, Cambridge, Ill., were among 13 students from Black Hawk College-East Campus honored at the 2006 Foundersí Scholars banquet.
Those receiving the award must have at least a 3.75 grade point average and completed 30 hours of course work.
A large plaque listing all past honorees is located on the wall across from the switchboard at the East Campus in Kewanee.
Student selected for research opportunity
Diana Mina, Davenport, was selected to participate in the Summer Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program at Kansas State University, Manhattan.
Selected students from United States and international universities spend nine weeks working with faculty mentors and graduate students.
Mina, a student at the University of Iowa, worked with David Renter, Kansas State assistant professor of diagnostic medicine and pathobiology.
Physician honored by College of Radiology
Dr. Robert Hartung, Davenport, was inducted as a Fellow in the American College of Radiology, one of the highest honors conferred by the organization.
While all members are expected to maintain high standards, only about 10 percent are selected for fellowship. Nominees are selected on the basis of service to medicine, significant accomplishments in scientific or clinical research, and outstanding reputation among colleagues and the local community.
Hartung is a diagnostic radiologist at Radiology Group P.C., Genesis Medical Center and DeWitt Community Hospital.
Dentist named diplomate in implant dentistry
Dr. David Jarrin, Moline, joined 316 other dentists as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Implantology/ Implant Dentistry.
To earn the designation, Jarrin was required to pass a series of written and oral examinations, practice implant dentistry for at least five years and present cases for review by a panel of implant dentists.
