CLINTON, Iowa — An $80,000 federal grant will help offset the costs of land acquisition at the Clinton Municipal Airport.

The grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation was announced Friday.

The airport, located at 2000 S. 60th St., is acquiring about 80 acres of surrounding land in order to lengthen one of its two runways and meet requirements that have changed regarding the amount of open space needed around an airstrip, said airport manager Mike Nass.

The $80,000 will help pay costs associated with purchasing a 7-acre parcel of land within the next few weeks, and Nass said he hopes to have most of the remaining land purchased before the end of the year.

The airport has a 5,200-foot landing strip and a 3,700-foot landing strip that will be lengthened to 4,500 feet.

“For an airport our size, that’s what the runways should be,” Nass said.
