(Contributed photo) Frank Drew is having a CD release party Saturday for his album "Standing in the Spotlight" at the Last Chance Lounge in Rock Island.

Frank Drew’s first solo album, “Standing in the Spotlight,” truly has a one-man band behind it.

Drew played both soprano and alto saxophone on the jazz album, as well as singing a few of the vocals.

“Everything’s done by me, played by me and mastered (engineering) by me,” he said.

He did everything but make copies of the album, but that will come with his second release since he’s learning to duplicate CDs on his home computer.

The 51-year-old Springfield, Ill., native has been in the Quad-Cities for about 15 years as part of bands that have included Funky Me and the Unfound Funk, Sir Cannabis Funk, Magnum Force, Burnt McMelbatoast, the Pena Brothers, Hal Reed and the Ever-Lovin’ Blues Band, New Complexion and the Funktastic Five.

His most recent efforts have been with his wife, singer and violin player Joanie Mercy, in the group Black and Blue Blonde.

That group released its first album last year, which gave him the incentive to put out a solo project, Drew said.

“It’s just a chance to step out a little more, that’s all,” he said.

The performing part was easy, he said. The difficulty came in the recording process, all done in his home.

“I was just trying to do it all,” he said.
