The weather took its time warming up Saturday, but the athletes didn’t wait around.

Great times were clocked all day by the high school and college athletes, and it wasn’t limited to the winners.

I talked to numerous area athletes today after fine runs.

Kelsey Regan of Davenport North and Anne Martin of Pleasant Valley had superb 1,500 efforts. It was great to hear how thrilled they were just to be competing with the state’s best.

All told six records fell at the Relays, between high schools and colleges.

North senior AG Bradford’s record performance was as good as any. She’s so smooth out there, you barely notice she’s finishing in such short times.

To all the area athletes I didn’t get to talk to, I hope to get that chance in the near future. With so many kids here, I couldn’t quite be everywhere at once.

State’s only three weeks away.

I think I’ll be excited when it gets here, but after three whirlwind days at Drake already, I’m not ready for more just yet.

But no questions, in a couple weeks, I sure will be. And I know the athletes will be, too.
