DeWITT, Iowa — Central Community Schools Superintendent Carol Hansen will leave the district at the end of the school year to begin a new career.
She plans to move closer to her family and will become the executive director and CEO of the Girl Scouts of Northeast Kansas and Northwest Missouri in Kansas City, Mo.
Hansen, who has served as the district’s superintendent since 2004, said Tuesday she is retiring from the education field after 35 years and is looking forward to being closer to her two daughters and two infant granddaughters in the Kansas City area.
Hansen said she is proud of what the district has accomplished during her tenure, including the development and execution of a five-year plan, additions to Central Community High School, improvements in staff development and curriculum, and guiding the district through difficult financial times.
School board president Kurt Rickard said Hansen was instrumental in the improvements to the high school, which include a $3.2 million addition completed last summer that included more classrooms and a weight room. Work recently began on a $1.8 million project for a new cafeteria and remodeled kitchen.
Rickard said Hansen also helped keep the district’s budget afloat by overseeing such measures as closing the elementary school in Welton and moving the students to Ekstrand Elementary in DeWitt.
“I think she’s done a good job,” Rickard said.
The school board will meet tonight to begin discussions on hiring a search firm to conduct the search for a new superintendent and will meet again Friday to review proposals and hire a firm, Rickard said.
“We have to move fast,” he said.
