CLINTON, Iowa — The Clinton Community School District’s facilities task force is gathering information about the possibility of building a new middle school and closing the existing Washington and Lyons middle schools.
The task force has been meeting since October to discuss long-term facility needs of the school district.
Task force chairwoman Jean Buikema said an earlier suggestion of putting only seventh- and eighth-grade students in the two existing middle school buildings and building a new facility for sixth-graders has been dropped because public comments came in against the idea.
“There really wasn’t any purpose in going forward with that idea,” she said.
Task force member Richard Kissack said some believed having a separate school for sixth-graders would add another year of transition for those students between elementary school and middle school.
Buikema said the task force is considering making a recommendation of either spending about $13 million to renovate Washington Middle School and $8 million to renovate Lyons Middle School, or spending about $33 million to build a new, larger school.
“I flip-flop from one hour to the next,” Buikema said.
One of the main concerns is where a new school would be located, Buikema said. Another concern is that a new building likely would require the passage of a bond referendum, and Buikema said Clinton voters have a history of rejecting building referendums.
The task force also identified about $30 million in renovations and improvements needed at Clinton High School, including improvements in the facilities for fine arts, sciences and industrial technology.
Once more information about the options is gathered, the task force will have more public meetings to get input about the proposals, Buikema said.
