Thunderstorms that rumbled through the Quad-Cities area this morning brought the heaviest and most widespread rain expected today and won’t have much effect on Mississippi River flooding.
Forecasters were concerned earlier this week that heavy rains today could cause a second flood crest. Rains went farther north, which could delay a drop in the river but not cause a second crest, Jeff Zogg, a hydrologist for the National Weather Service, said today.
The river was at 18.7 feet at 10 a.m. today, down from Tuesday’s crest of 19.24 feet, according to the National Weather Service. The current flood forecast is for the river to drop below 18 feet Saturday.
This morning’s storms brought 0.26 of an inch to Moline and 0.15 of an inch to Davenport, according to the National Weather Service. Rain is forecast for later today but is not expected to be as widespread or heavy, Zogg said. The area is still at risk for severe weather as the temperature rises.
Saturday’s forecast holds a chance of showers Saturday, followed by the next chance of rain Tuesday, according to the National Weather Service.
