A Rock Island home was probably a total loss after sustaining extensive fire and water damage this morning, fire officials said.

No one was injured in the fire that started around 10 a.m. in the 1100 block of 3rd Avenue, Tim Gibbons, a Rock Island battalion chief, said.

Firefighters were still on the scene trying to put out hot spots before noon. Gibbons said the cause of the fire had not been determined.

He said the first report was of a porch fire. When crews arrived, they found most of the blaze was in the attic.

Gibbons said firefighters couldn’t get into the attic because of the heat and at one point had to back out and take a defensive approach before putting the flames down. A few large holes could be seen in the roof.

The American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area is assisting the residents. Anyone interested in making a contribution can call (309) 743-2166.
