Two local disaster assistance agencies say they aren’t asking for donations for relief of the Myanmar cyclone because they are waiting to learn what role they can play.

World Relief and the American Red Cross are among the American relief agencies willing to provide help in the wake of Cyclone Nargis. Myanmar’s ruling junta is limiting access from foreign groups. The local chapters for World Relief and the American Red Cross say their national organizations are taking a wait-and-see stance.

The Myanmar Red Cross Society is providing assistance in the country, said Leslie Anthony, spokeswoman for the American Red Cross of the Quad-Cities Area. The nation’s rulers are requesting donations be made directly to the government.
