Ready for some fresh produce? Area farmers markets open this week

Farmers markets will be opening this week all around the Quad-City region. Most markets will close in October.

Here is where to find one in your area:

* The Davenport Farmers Market, with vendors from the Mississippi Valley Growers Association, or  MVGA, and the River City Market Association, has moved to the east side of NorthPark Mall in an area of the parking lot between the Penney and Sears stores.

The market will be open from 8 a.m. to noon Wednesdays and Saturdays beginning May 3. The opening day celebration includes a free treat  for customers in honor of the MVGA’s 15th anniversary.

The market features locally grown produce, bedding plants, baked goods, heritage crafts and locally produced wine.

* The Davenport Freight House Farmers Market will operate at 421 W. River Drive, Davenport, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays, beginning May 3 (Mississippi River flood conditions permitting).

Products to be sold include farm-fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, poultry and meats, cheeses, wines, eggs, honey, jams and jellies, dips and salsas, candy, fresh-cut and dried flowers, bedding plants, annuals and perennials, houseplants, garden art, wearable art, jewelry, homemade soaps and toiletries, coffee and massages.

* The Bettendorf Farmers Market, operated by the MVGA, is relocating to the south side of State Street between the Alter Building and the power station. Entry to the market can be gained from 21st or 23rd streets.

Hours will be 2-6 p.m. Thursdays beginning May 1. Cake, in honor of the MVGA’s 15th anniversary, will be served on opening day.

The market will sell fresh produce, baked goods, locally produced meats and plants.

* The Trinity 7th Street Market is open from 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays through October at 500 John Deere Road, Moline.

Items sold include fresh produce, plants, homemade pies, meats, jellies and jams.

* The Trinity at Terrace Park market is open 3-6 p.m. Mondays through October at 4500 Utica Ridge Road, Bettendorf.

Back for the third year, the market features homegrown fruits and vegetables, homemade baked goods, plants, meats, jellies and jams.

* The Lyons Farmers Market in 4 Square Park, Clinton, Iowa, will open Saturday, May 31, and run through Nov. 1. Hours will be 8-11 a.m. Saturdays and 4-6 p.m. Wednesdays.

* The Lost Nation, Iowa, Farmers Market is open year-round at The Market Place, located at the corner of Long Avenue and Main Street.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Fridays, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays.

The market sells locally grown vegetables and fruits, homemade baked goods and locally produced hormone- and antibiotic-free pork, beef and chicken.

* The Produce and More market will operate 3-5 p.m. Wednesdays from June 4 through Sept. 24 in the American Legion parking lot in Wilton, Iowa.

The market sells baked goods, fruit, vegetables, eggs and homemade maple syrup.

* The DeWitt Farmers Market is open 4-6 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays at Lincoln Park in DeWitt, Iowa. The market will open June 2 and close in the middle of October.

* The Muscatine (Iowa) Farmers Market is open 7:30-11:30 a.m. Saturdays from May 3 through Oct. 25 along the riverfront (Sycamore Street and Mississippi Drive) and 3-6 p.m. Tuesdays from May 6 through Oct. 28 in the hardware store parking lot on Park Avenue. Fresh produce, homemade baked goods, eggs and other items will be sold.

* The Tipton Farmers Market Association market is open 4-6 p.m. Thursdays behind the courthouse in Tipton, Iowa. The market will operate from May 22 through September. Locally grown fruits and vegetables, baked goods and other items will be sold. 

* The Cedar County Farmers Market operates from May through October on 4th Street south of the courthouse in Tipton, Iowa. The market, which sells fresh produce, baked goods, craft items and jellies, will open for the season May 17. Hours are 7:30-11:30 a.m. Saturdays.

* The Twin City Farmers Market operates at 106 Ave. A in Sterling, Ill. The market is open from 8 a.m. to noon year-round on Saturdays and 4-7 p.m. Wednesdays from June through August.

Products sold include locally grown pork, Black Angus beef, pasteurized bison and chicken, eggs, fruits and vegetables, baked goods, noodles, locally milled cornmeal, plants, jellies, soy candles, milk soaps and lotions, forged ironware, yarns, leather goods, Corian and wood scroll work, laser-etched stone and wood, pottery and rag rugs.

* The Geneseo (Ill.) Farmers Market is open 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays beginning June 21 on the east side of the convenience store along Chicago Street. Produce, meats, baked goods and craft items will be sold. Educational events will be held every week.

* The Morrison (Ill.) Farmers Market will be open 8-11 a.m. Saturdays beginning June 7 on Lincolnway Road behind the Morrison Historical Museum. The market will close at the end of September.

Items sold will include produce, breads, pies, meats, cookie bouquets, jewelry, scones and free coffee.
