Insurance will cover only half the cost of about $10,000 worth of power tools recently stolen from two Habitat for Humanity trailers in Rock Island.

At least 20 tools were stolen sometime between 10 p.m. April 30 and 8 a.m. May 1, according to Habitat for Humanity officials. The trailers were parked between two homes Habitat is building at 804 and 814 9th Ave.

Julie Surratt, director of development for Habitat, said insurance will reimburse the organization $5,000 for the tools, but Habitat still will owe $250 for the deductible and will be short about half the tools it had.

Among the items stolen were several saws, compressors, nail guns and generators, the organization has said.

Surratt said three builds are ongoing and workers are using borrowed tools, which are collecting wear and tear.

“Our summer is only going to pick up,” Surratt said. “We have another ground breaking in June.”

In the past week Habitat for Humanity has received a few donations, Surratt said.
