CLINTON, Iowa — Two Camanche men, Christopher L. Cundiff, 27, and Lucas S. Stevens, 23, are hospitalized with serious injuries after the car they were in struck a retention wall and caught fire.
Cundiff was driving a 1999 Oldsmobile 88 eastbound in the 2400 block of Camanche Ave. at 11:28 p.m. Wednesday when the car traveled onto the parkway on the south side of the road, then crossed four lanes of traffic and collided with a retaining wall at Snodgrass Motors and caught fire, the Clinton Police Department said.
The fire was extinguished by the Clinton Fire Department and witnesses. Stevens, a passenger in the vehicle, was taken from the scene by helicopter and transported to University Hospitals in Iowa City. His condition was not available Thursday.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life to extricate Cundiff from the vehicle. He was taken by ambulance to Mercy Medical Center-Clinton, then transferred by helicopter to Genesis Medical Center, East Rusholme Street, Davenport, where he is in fair condition.
The accident remains under investigation.
