BELLEVUE, Iowa — Someone has been stealing gravel after Jackson County road crews have spread it on some county roads.

Jackson County Engineer Clark Schloz said they’ve discovered several places between Bellevue and LaMotte on 216th and 258th streets where someone has stolen the gravel.

“It’s happened at more than one location,” Schloz said.

The amount of gravel taken would equal a couple of pickup loads at each site, he said.

Jackson County Supervisors said they will have the thief prosecuted.

“If we catch them, we will take it to the sheriff and county attorney,” Supervisor Chairman Larry “Buck” Koos said. “We can’t be gravelling someone else’s property. We won’t take this lightly.”

Supervisor Jack Willey said it was odd someone would think about stealing that much gravel and not be seen.

“That’s just foolish,” Willey said.

Supervisors are asking for the public’s help in the gravel theft. Residents should call the sheriff’s office with information.

“We are working hard to get the roads back into shape,” Schloz said. “We don’t need this.”
