Tom Foley and Dave Bush, the tennis coaches at Davenport Assumption, are stepping down after this season.

With his daughter, Adrianne, graduating this year, Foley said he decided it was the best time to call it quits after 11 years as a tennis coach at Assumption, the first eight with the boys team.

“I’ve had enough of it,” Foley said. “Sometimes you have got to move on. I know Assumption is trying to find a good coach to take over my job, and the Knights will also use summer programs to build players for the coming seasons.”

While Foley is completely stepping away from the Knights’ coaching ranks, Bush’s future is not as certain. He said he might stay on as an assistant coach, with Davenport Central grad Don Crawford taking over the reins, or he might step down.

“It has been a pleasure to work with these kids at Assumption,” said Bush, who took over the program when Foley went to coach the girls. “They are a great group of kids. The parental support has always been fantastic.”

Foley led the boys team to the state finals in 2004, where it finished second and then led the girls team that placed third at state in 2006, his first year as girls coach.

Adrianne Foley teamed with Kendra Green in doubles during that 2006 year, a year in which she said she became even closer to her father.

“It has been a pretty great experience having my dad as my coach during my high school years,” she said. “During that state finals year, I not only got his support as a father but was able to learn a lot from him and was able to share more about my game with him than other players can with their parents because he was my coach.”
