Meal preparation at the Scott County Jail could return next month, the Scott County Board of Supervisors learned Tuesday.

Renovations to the 1983 jail — including the kitchen — as part of Phase II of jail construction as well as construction of the new jail prompted the board to contract with Hy-Vee to provide meals for inmates. Meal preparation will return to staff and inmate workers after the kitchen is completed in June.

The county must provide 60 days notice to Hy-Vee that it is terminating its agreement, facility and support services director Dave Donovan said. Renovations are expected to be completed in late July or early August.

“We are making significant progress in Phase II,” Donovan said Tuesday at the board’s committee-of-the-whole meeting.

Courthouse employee entrances on Ripley Street, blocked by construction, are expected to be accessible by the end of June, Donovan said. A skybridge linking the Davenport Police Department and the courthouse also is nearing completion.

The board also heard that it will vote on an intergovernmental agreement with Blue Grass to repave about one mile of Oak Lane. The cost of the project is $130,390, which will be split evenly between the county and Blue Grass.

Blue Grass originally balked at the project because of cost concerns related to the city’s planned public safety building. The county will pay for the project upfront, with Blue Grass repaying its share starting in 2011.

“They know that project needs to be done, but with the public safety building they were concerned about their cash flow,” county engineer Jon Burgstrum said.
