So this is what happens when Congress punts on immigration policy. In the absence of political leadership, the hard work of enforcing a flawed immigration law falls on uniformed officers using tactics denounced again and again as unfair and, obviously, ineffective.

Let state law help prevent dropouts

Public education is a community initiative. That was Gov. Chet Culver’s message Wednesday at Destination Graduation, Iowa’s Dropout Prevention Leadership Summit in Des Moines. The summit gathered educators to develop statewide strategies for keeping young people in school. This commendable effort charges communities, not just school districts, with reducing the dropout rate.

Think outside of the car

Gasoline at $1.50 per gallon made biking to work an option for only a zealous cyclist. Who else would give up a comfortable car commute to save pennies per day?

Police task force still needs integrity

Call it a task force. Call it an investigative team. But for now, leave “integrity” out of it. Without any public involvement on the police-only Rock Island County Integrity Task Force, there can be no integrity.
