Good TGIF morning, Quad-Cities. At 6 a.m. it’s 43 degrees under fair skies. Today there is a slight chance of isolated showers after 1 p.m., otherwise we will see partly cloudy skies with a high near 72 degrees. Tonight will be mostly cloudy, with a low around 51 degrees, according to the National Weather Service. As far as the weekend goes, Saturday will be breezy with a high near 73 degrees. Sunday’s high will be 68 degrees with a slight chance of showers Sunday night.
The Davenport Police Department will be conducting nighttime seat belt enforcement efforts this weekend. According to a Davenport Police Department news release, police will select locations with a high volume of on-coming traffic that is moving slowly or is stopped. A plains clothes spotter officer will be placed to look into vehicles to determine whether occupants are wearing a seat belt. The spotter officer will radio ahead to enforcement officers who will stop violators and issue the appropriate citations. The nighttime passenger vehicle occupant fatality rate is about three times higher than the daytime rate. Studies have identified a number of factors that are likely to contribute to lower seat belt use at night including:
• People who wear seat belts during the day may be less likely to buckle up at night because they know police are less likely to observe non-belt use at night.
• The demographics of nighttime drivers and passengers often differs significantly from daylight hours, with more of those who tend to engage in risk taking behaviors like speeding, impaired driving and non-use of seat belts.
