TRACK AND FIELD REPORT

Standards produce more state qualifers

The Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union no doubt put a smile on the face of many Quad-City area girls track athletes Saturday when they released the minimum qualifying standards for this week’s Class 4A and 3A state meets in Des Moines.

Only the top two finishers in each event Friday were guaranteed to make it to state, but several area athletes were among those to record times, distances or heights that were among the next best 12 from across the state.

See the list of qualifiers on page B6.

Columbus boys head to state in 4 events

PACKWOOD, Iowa — Columbus’ Sam Chaney and Casey Robertson finished 1-2 in the 1,600 meters and 2-3 in the 3,200 to qualify for this week’s state meet in both events Saturday at the Iowa Class 2A boys district meet at Pekin High School.

Chaney won the 1,600 in 4 minutes, 48.95 seconds, and Robertson was less than a second behind.

Columbus also had a pair of runner-up finishes at the meet to advance. Tony Marin was second in the high jump at 6 feet, and the medley relay unit also took second.

Wapello picked up a pair of victories. Nick Eversmeyer won the shot put at 45-7.25, and Danny Johnson won the long jump at 20-8.5.

The top three place winners in each event advanced to state.

Columbus’ Hernandez heads to state

PACKWOOD, Iowa — Navil Hernandez won the 200-meter dash and placed second in the 400 Saturday to qualify for the Iowa Class 2A girls track state meet in both events.

Hernandez won the 200 in 28.33 seconds and finished in 1:06.88 in the 400 at the Pekin Regional meet.

Summer Chandler of Columbus won the 400 hurdles in 1:11.50.

Wapello’s Logan Hjerleid earned a trip to state with a second-place finish in the high jump at 4-8.
