Team races
Class 1A leader — West Lyon only has one win — Andrew Simons in the shot put — through 10 events, but the boys have amassed 22 points to lead Northeast, Alta and West Hancock by four.
Class 2A leader — St. Edmond Fort Dodge and Mid-Prairie lead with 36 points. West Liberty is fifth at 19, and Assumption is sixth at 18.
Class 3A leader — Cedar Rapids Xavier totaled 32.5 points, and Mount Pleasant, the leader after Day 1, is second with 28.
Class 4A leader — A throw of 57 feet in the shot put gave Thomas Reynolds the win and also put Iowa City West atop the team race with 43 points. Pleasant Valley is one back at 42, and Marshalltown is third with 26.
110 hurdles
Class 1A preliminary leader — Austin McBeth (Waco) 14.89. Class 2A preliminary leader — Channing Puls 14.4. Class 3A preliminary leader — Jordan Mullen (Atlantic) 14.18. Class 4A preliminary leader — Terrance Roberts (Waterloo West) 14.59.
Notable: Mullen’s time broke the previous Class 3A record of 14.46, which was set 30 years ago. Mullen’s finish was third best in Iowa history. Central DeWitt’s Casey Kreiter ran a 15.94 to tie for 10th, two spots out of qualifying for Saturday’s Class 3A final. In Class 2A, Bellevue’s Mitchell Michel ran a 16.5 to finish 22nd. Davenport Assumption’s Jake O’Rourke didn’t finish the race. Clinton junior Ethan Holmes qualified third, and Pleasant Valley senior Drew Shradel was seventh. Muscatine junior Alex Bailey just missed the finals, finishing 10th — just 0.05 seconds out of eighth. Andrew senior Corey Manders took 11th in Class 1A, missing the finals.
400 hurdles
Class 1A champion — Brock Caves (Keosauqua Van Buren) 54.2. Class 2A champion — Brad Mosinski (Pekin) 53.44. Class 3A champion — Jordan Cotton (Mount Pleasant) 53.47. Class 4A champion — Ethan Holmes (Clinton) 53.03.
Notable: Running in the second of three sections in Class 2A, West Liberty junior Tomas Lira placed eighth overall with a 55.33 finish. Class 3A winner Cotton is the son of former Davenport Central and University of Iowa football/track star Marshall Cotton. For the second straight year, Andrew’s Corey Manders (54.44) finished runner-up in Class 1A. Andrew senior Brandon Wagner was 20th. In Class 4A, Pleasant Valley’s Drew Schradel was fourth, and Bettendorf’s Nick Oestreich was 20th.
400 relay
Class 1A preliminary leader — West Hancock 43.42. Class 2A preliminary leader — Okoboji 43.78. Class 3A preliminary leader — Cedar Rapids Xavier 43.01. Class 4A preliminary leader — Burlington 42.68.
Notable: In Class 2A, Davenport Assumption was 0.09 seconds behind Okoboji to qualify second. In Class 3A, Maquoketa ended up 12th with a 44.52 finish. Davenport North and Bettendorf claimed the last two qualifying slots in Class 4A. North Scott took 12th.
800 relay
Class 1A champion — Alta 1:31.03. Class 2A champion — St. Edmond Fort Dodge 1:31.22. Class 3A champion — Cedar Rapids Xavier 1:29.08. Class 4A champion — Cedar Rapids Washington 1:28.86.
Notable: Xavier’s winning time in Class 3A broke the eight-year meet record of 1:29.4. Central DeWitt’s unit was 10th at 1:32.56. In Class 2A, Davenport Assumption came in second, merely 0.13 seconds behind St. Edmond. Wilton was 20th. Clinton might have won the Class 4A race had Ethan Holmes not run the 400 hurdles less than an hour earlier. Even so, he followed his hurdles win by anchoring the River Kings to second in the 800 relay at 1:29.54. Pleasant Valley (1:30.3) was fourth, and Bettendorf (1:30.68) was eighth.
1,600 relay
Class 1A preliminary leader — Lake Mills 3:25.84. Class 2A preliminary leader — St. Edmond Fort Dodge 3:25.58. Class 3A preliminary leader — Washington 3:22.71. Class 4A preliminary leader — Cedar Falls 3:20.25.
Notable: St. Edmond was just 0.02 seconds ahead of Mid-Prairie in Class 2A. West Liberty qualified with the fifth fastest time at 3:27.28. Davenport Assumption finished 15th (3:31.53) and didn’t qualify for Saturday’s final. Clinton finished second in Class 4A and was the lone area qualifier. Pleasant Valley placed 12, and Davenport West was 18th.
Distance medley relay
Class 1A champion — BCLUW Conrad 3:36.41. Class 2A champion — Mid-Prairie 3:26.16. Class 3A champion — Charles City 3:30.87. Class 4A champion — Pleasant Valley (Bruce Clark, Ellis Robinson, Mike Hemming, Blake Irwin) 3:26.51.
Notable: Mid-Prairie won in an overall state record time, which is the best nationally this year. And that came from the slowest qualifying heat. “We put it in our heads that we have to go win this race,” anchor Aaron Stocksdell said. “I still think we could have gone a little faster. West Liberty placed fifth in Class 2A at 3:37.42. Wilton ran a 3:41.74 for 14th place. Charles City qualified first out of the second section in Class 3A. In Class 4A, PV won in record time thanks to a 1:49.6 split for Irwin in the 800 anchor leg. Bettendorf was ninth, and Davenport North was 14th. Northeast took third in Class 1A, moving up to first from fifth in the final 400 before Conrad and West Lyon pulled through.
Long jump
Class 3A champion — Trevor Galbreath (Keokuk) 21-6½. Class 4A champion — Derek Williams (Marshalltown) 21-10½.
Notable: ADM Adel senior Zach Hutzell was the only Class 3A jumper other than Galbreath to crack 21 feet. Maquoketa senior Eric Manson finished sixth with a best of 20-6. He entered the event with the top qualifying distance at 21-9¾. Also in Class 3A, Central DeWitt senior Ben Lubben took seventh thanks to a final leap of 20-5¼. Davenport West senior Dominique Quinn entered as the top seed in Class 4A but finished 14th, one spot behind Bettendorf senior Garrett Scott. Jourdan Coley of Bettendorf was 21st.
High Jump
Class 1A champion — Kody Gillaspie (Westwood Sloan) 6-8. Class 2A champion — Jordan Sathoff (Pekin) 6-10½.
Notable — Last year’s Class 2A winner cleared 6-6, but after Sathoff reached 6-10 at his district meet, he knew what he was capable of. “It felt just like I thought,” he said. “Amazing.” Also in Class 2A, Columbus senior Tony Marin placed 14th at 5-10. Three Class 1A jumpers hit 6-8.
Shot put
Class 3A champion — Brandon Scherff (Denison-Schleswig) 59-5½. Class 4A champion — Thomas Reynolds (Iowa City West) 57-0.
Notable — Adam McDonnell of Central DeWitt placed 12th in Class 3A with a throw of 50-10. Scherff fouled just once and had four throws longer than 56 feet. Neither area Class 4A qualifier made it out of the preliminaries. Clinton’s Jayrd Prince was 11th, and Bettendorf’s Matt Potter was 19th.
Discus
Class 1A champion — Dominic Alvis (Logan-Magnolia) 169-3. Class 2A champion — Cody Bahrke (Tri-Center Neola) 172-5.
Notable: Tipton senior Matt O’Donnell had thrown 163-0 as recently as April 20, but he reached just 137 to place 12th in Class 2A.
