The Pleasant Valley Spartans beat the Davenport West Falcons in both games of a doubleheader Thursday with strong hitting and a dominant start from Derek Brogan in Game 2.
The Spartans won Game 1 10-9 and the second one 10-3.
Brad Weiss started game one for the Spartans and only lasted 1/3 inning, giving up five runs.
He was bailed out by a powerful offense and a strong relief appearance from Devon Brogan. Brogan left with the game tied, and Nathan Schickling pitched the sixth inning to pick up the win.
All nine Spartan starters had at least one hit in the game, including multihit games from Schickling and Keegan Quinby. Eight of the nine scored at least one run.
Willy Dodds took the loss for Davenport West, surrendering three runs in the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie.
The Falcons came within one in the seventh against PV pitcher Brent Tunis, but Joe Black grounded out with two men on base to end the game.
Derek Brogan started the second game for the Spartans and shut down the Falcons, allowing two hits and an unearned run through six innings before running into some trouble in the seventh.
“(Derek Brogan) has a lot of movement on his fastball, and he was able to control it very well,” PV coach Tim Gronski said. “With all that movement he runs into some control problems.”
Derek Brogan said he had a little trouble spotting his curveball and relied mostly on his fastball.
The control problems appeared in the seventh inning when Derek Brogan walked one and hit two batters while giving up two runs.
“I let the game go on, and got a little comfortable with the runs,” Derek Brogan said. “(But) I think I kept my composure pretty well.”
The Spartans came through with ten runs again, six against Falcon starter Justin Black.
Black took the loss, pitching 2 1/3innings while giving up three hits and walking six.
“We looked for balls middle away and made sure we didn’t help (Black) out,” Gronski said. “We thought we hit the ball pretty good tonight and were far more aggressive in that second game.”
