Davenport public works crews started building a levee on River Drive between Brady and 4th streets this morning to prepare for flooding expected along the Mississippi River.

City spokeswoman Jennifer Nahra issued an update on the city’s flood plan efforts this morning. The release is below:



Mississippi River Flooding Update

June 10, 2008

City of Davenport crews are continuing to implement the Mississippi River Emergency Flood Protection Plan.

The Corps of Engineers and the National Weather Service announced that today’s river level is 14.42 feet and are predicting a flood of 16 feet on Wednesday at noon. The river level is expected to reach 17.96 feet by 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.

Today’s work includes building the sandbag wall at Modern Woodmen Park and the levee in East Davenport.

Today City of Davenport Public Works Director Dee Bruemmer announced the following:

• South Concord from River Drive to Utah Avenue

• Beiderbecke is closed east of Harrison Street

• River Drive will remain closed between Brady Street and 4th Street until further notice

• Perry, Pershing and Iowa streets are closed south of 2nd Street to thru traffic

The City of Davenport Public Works Emergency Center will be open today until 4:30 p.m. The City will take calls from residents and businesses for unfilled sandbags and sand by calling (563) 327-5120. Deliveries will run throughout the day today and Wednesday, June 11th.
