The forecast crest is still climbing as the Mississippi River rose above flood stage this afternoon.
The National Weather Service has revised the crest for Lock and Dam 15 to 18.4 feet at 1 a.m. on Saturday. The crest was moved up by about 12 hours. The weather service previously predicted a crest of 17.96 feet at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
The river was observed just above flood stage at 2 p.m. this afternoon, recorded at 15.01 feet.
City workers were at work starting this morning on earthen levees that were to be built to withstand a 21.5 feet flood. Dee Bruemmer, public works director, anticipated the crest would be increased from what was predicted Monday.
Levee construction is to continue Wednesday as the river level is expected to climb past 16 feet, according to the National Weather Service.
