Barbara Stainger has been coming to Gravy’s every Tuesday night since the bar and grill began its Taco Tuesday special about a year ago.

The bar offers three tacos that weigh between one and 1 1/2 pounds for only $4.50. Stainger said the tacos are so big that just one fills her up, so that’s all she orders. Her bill is only $2.

“They have really good flavor,” she said. “They’re not bland and there’s lot of meat in it and cheese. They’re not little skimpy ones like you get at some places.”

The west Davenport bar and grill originally opened as an ice cream parlor in the early 1900s. It operated as Joe Lang’s Bar for nearly 50 years before Les Miller bought the business and renamed it Gravy’s.

In addition to Taco Tuesdays, Miller also offers deals every day of the week on $5 tenderloin baskets that come with a large portion of homemade fries and an appetizer such as chicken wings, broccoli bites or cheese balls for $3 to $3.50. He also serves breakfast all day with nearly every breakfast item ringing in at $4.

“A lot of people come in and can’t believe our prices are so low,” he said. “And we try to keep it under $10 just so people can come down and bring their family and have a good meal and don’t have to go on top of the hill and save the gas.”

Miller said families often come in to eat the dinner special. If the kids don’t like what’s on the menu that night, the kitchen will always whip up a grilled cheese sandwich to suit their tastes.

“It’s important for us to give everyone a good meal,” he said. “We come from a large family where a meal was very valuable. The west end has very large family values, so they like to come down where they can buy the best for their dollar.”

Gravy’s also values its sports and runs drink and food special during televised NASCAR races, Chicago Cubs and Iowa Hawkeyes games. The bar offers $2 tall boys during the events and a Hawkeye burger basket for $1.50 during games.
