SPRINGFIELD — Democrat Colleen Callahan said Thursday that she’s trying to raise as much money as possible in order to show her campaign’s viability in her bid for Congress from the 18th Congressional District.

Included in that effort is getting support from party leaders, she said. Callahan, of Kickapoo, appeared with state Comptroller Dan Hynes on Thursday to get an endorsement.

At the appearance, Hynes took a jab at Callahan’s Republican opponent — state Rep. Aaron Schock of Peoria. Hynes said he didn’t know much about Schock.

“Since he came into Springfield, I can’t really think of a single thing that he’s been known for in terms of accomplishing in the legislature,” Hynes said of Schock. “I’m not saying he

hasn’t passed legislation. I just don’t know what that would be.”

Hynes conceded it might be harder for Schock to get things done as part of the minority party in Springfield.

Schock campaign manager Steve Shearer countered saying he didn’t know if many average people would be aware of Hynes’ accomplishments. Shearer noted that Schock has ushered legislation through the General

Assembly.

“Maybe he doesn’t follow the legislature very well,” Shearer said of Hynes.

Callahan and Schock are vying to succeed Republican U.S. Rep. Ray LaHood of Peoria, who is retiring when his term ends in January.

For his part, Hynes deflected a question about his political future for 2010, declining to say if he’d seek re-election or another office.
