Just days after successfully keeping the Mississippi River out of her Buffalo, Iowa, home, Judi O’Neal lost it to fire this morning.
Firefighters from Buffalo, Montpelier, Blue Grass and Walcott were on the scene of the fire at 628 W. Front St., near the banks of the Mississippi.
O’Neal’s daughter said at the scene that they were able to keep floodwaters out from flooding the past three weeks, but the single-story structure now has been significantly damaged, perhaps destroyed.
The building previously was a gas station and was transformed into the Whistlestop Restaurant before it was remodeled into a home.
O’Neal was not home at the time the fire broke out.
