DES MOINES — Gov. Chet Culver is urging Iowans to join the AmeriCorps national service program to help with flood recovery efforts, including the cleanup of damaged buildings and facilities, debris removal and reconstruction.

“Now more than ever, we need the skills, time and commitment of every Iowan,” Culver said in a statement. “And together, I am confident that we can rebuild our state stronger and better than before.”

Culver is encouraging everyone from college students on summer break to recent retirees to get involved.

In the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City area, 200 eight-week positions and 30 one-year positions will be available. Another 20 eight-week positions will be available in Waverly.

The positions come with a modest living stipend that amounts to about $1,000 per month.

Upon completion, members are given an educational award that can be used for higher education costs or to pay back student loans. For the part-time positions, the award amounts to $1,000 and for yearlong positions, it is $4,725.

Adam Lounsbury, executive director of the Iowa Commission on Volunteer Service, said the federal government made the positions available, and they’re hoping they’ll be filled.
