DES MOINES — Iowa sweet corn could be hard to come by for the July 4th weekend.
A double punch of a cold spring followed by wet fields and flooding means a delay in the traditional feast. It also means imported corn from Georgia and Florida for the cookout.
Boone County grower Wilbur Scott says this will be the first time in years that they won't have sweet corn for the holiday weekend.
The corn will come eventually, but maybe not for a few weeks.
Sweet corn, which is picked and eaten when still moist and immature, is a small part of Iowa's agriculture industry. It's grown on fewer than 6,000 of the state's 13 million acres of corn.
A good crop will yield about 12,000 ears an acre.
