Sean Hannity repeatedly states, “America is the greatest country in the world.” Given Hannity’s arrogant presentation, this statement comes off negative to those who see our country’s faults and desire improvement.
The Declaration of Independence, United States Constitution and many famous speeches have inspired democracy for centuries. However, many have been disillusioned by the disconnect between the ideals expressed in these documents and the reality of individuals, organizations, corporations and our government’s selfish motivations, which resulted in harm against fellow citizens and people around the world.
All of us agree that patriotism is sacrifice for the good of one’s country. The majority of World War II-era citizens sacrificed. To cope with shortages, they rationed and created new products and materials. They paid more taxes and pulled together.
It is easy to perform acts of patriotism during wartime when most agree on the war. It is harder to perform acts of patriotism when citizens disagree on the war’s cause.
Many raise their flags, put bronze stars on their homes, and display bumper stickers. Others argue whether one shows respect by placing one’s hand over one’s heart during the national anthem. All these are gestures and rhetoric, more nationalistic than patriotic.
What are we willing to sacrifice to lay aside our differences to solve the problems of global warming, energy dependence, pollution, immigration, health care, crumpling infrastructure, personal and national debt, and education?
