Regarding Ellen Frantzen’s letter: “Human deaths before canine deaths,” June 28:
I’m sorry that your son has to be serving in the war, to see the battles and see the soldiers that are killed. I hope he comes home soon and uninjured. Believe me, we do care about them!
You need to understand that Maple is not an “animal with no reason.” I know firsthand all the love and healing that she has given to the Donahue school and community.
Maple is my ‘grand dog’ if you will. My daughter, Tracy, was her trainer, caregiver, owner and a school counselor at Donahue.
Maple was at her job, every school day helping the children with a reading problem, emotional or educational problem or just to make their day better. She provided social, motivational and educational benefits.
Maple, with Tracy, would go to the hospital ICU wards and visit the kids when they were in an accident or went to funerals for their parents or siblings. Maple was a motivator, healer and a friend to 265 Donahue schoolchildren, plus their teachers and family members.
I’m sure dogs like Maple help the wounded service men and women to overcome their physical and mental problems when returning from war.
