The Bettendorf Bulldogs took both games of a doubleheader over Pleasant Valley on Thursday, winning 16-1 in Game 1 and rallying with a 5-4 victory in Game 2.

Bettendorf senior second baseman David Reckman hit two home runs and drove in four runs in Game 2.

Reckman, the Bulldogs’ leadoff hitter, said the home runs were the first of his high school career.

“The last one was when I was 14,” Reckman said. “I was just looking to hit the ball hard.”

The Spartans jumped ahead in the third inning of Game 2, scoring four runs off Bulldogs starter Mitch Overstreet to take a 4-1 lead.

Reckman hit his first home run, a solo shot, off Spartans starter Derek Brogan in the fifth inning to bring the  Bulldogs within two.

Devon Brogan, who replaced Derek Brogan in the sixth inning, hit Mitch Overstreet and Mitch Jurevitz to set the stage for Reckman who hit his second home run, a three-run shot to give the Bulldogs a 5-4 lead.

“He’s been struggling I tell him it all evens out,” Bulldogs coach Jay Fitzgerald said. “It sure did there.”

Eddie Pantzlaff pitched 22/3 scoreless innings to get the win for Bettendorf, while Devon Brogan took the loss.

Game 1 got out of control early with the Bulldogs batting around and taking an 8-0 lead in the second inning off Spartans starter Zac Sandry.

Sam Hershberger pitched well for Bettendorf, giving up one run on four hits, but the game was dominated by offense.

The Bulldogs also batted around in the fourth inning, taking a 16-1 lead after scoring eight more runs off West relievers Brent Tunis and Max Knutsen.

The game was called, according to a rule that ends a game after a 15-run lead is taken.

“Early and often I always say, and we did it for the first time in a while,” Fitzgerald said. “I like that better — less gray hairs.”
