Wine by the ounce

I got an e-mail from reader Jim Kerns of Eldridge, Iowa, about wine and how much restaurants charge per ounce.

Kerns and his wife almost always order wine with dinner when they go out, but he feels the drink is overpriced and is frustrated by restaurants not divulging the size of the serving along with the price.

He’s particularly annoyed when served three ounces or less per glass.

Kern thinks Germany, where the serving size of wine is regulated and wine glasses come with indicator lines to prove the customer is indeed getting what they pay for, has it right.

Like Kern, I appreciate a good glass of wine. I’m Italian, so it’s required. I can’t say I’ve ever been served a disappointingly small glass, but I prefer red wine, which I’ve noticed seems to come in larger glasses.

What do you other wine connoisseurs out there think? Should restaurants list the ounce size next to the price of a glass of wine? And have you ever paid a ridiculous amount for a very tiny glass?
