BELLEVUE, Iowa — A Maquoketa youth is listed in stable condition at an Iowa City hospital after he hit his head in a swimming accident near Spruce Creek.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Department said Zak Bellendier was airlifted Saturday evening from Mercy Health Center in Dubuque to University Hospitals in Iowa City with neck injuries. Sheriff’s officials said they were told Bellendier was in stable condition Monday and had undergone surgery.

Bellevue Assistant Police Chief Dennis “Bud” Schroeder said Bellendier and some others built a “makeshift” slide on Bellevue Beach, north of Spruce Creek near Bellevue.

At 4:58 p.m. Saturday, Bellevue Fire and Rescue was called to the beach. Schroeder said Bellendier had gone down the slide headfirst into about a foot of water. Bellevue Ambulance took Bellendier to Mercy Health Center in Dubuque.
