BELLEVUE, Iowa — An off-duty Jackson County sheriff’s deputy has been accused of backing into a Bellevue resident with his personal vehicle, an allegation denied by the deputy.
Bellevue Assistant Police Chief Dennis “Bud” Schroeder said Joe McDonald, 20, of Bellevue, accused Deputy Russ Long of backing into him at 220 S. Riverview at 10:18 p.m. Friday. McDonald was taken by Maquoketa Ambulance to Jackson County Regional Health Center, where he was treated and released.
“There’s no proof of contact,” Schroeder said. “We’re investigating it.”
Schroeder said Long’s car alarm had been set off several times that evening by fireworks in Bellevue. Schroeder said McDonald was upset over the car alarm sounding. There is no record of an altercation or contact between the deputy and McDonald on Friday night, Schroeder added.
Jackson County Sheriff Russ Kettmann said Long wrote a statement noting that he had not struck McDonald with his car. The sheriff said Bellevue police are handling the investigation.
