DURANT, Iowa — Freshman Andrew Dobek hit three doubles and his first varsity home run, and second-ranked Davenport Assumption beat Camanche 17-0 in five innings Saturday in the Class 2A District quarterfinals at Durant-Bennett High School.
Three of Dobek’s six RBI’s came from his fourth-inning homer over the left-field fence that put Assumption up by 13.
The win catapulted the Knights (29-8) past the Indians (13-18) and into Tuesday’s district semifinal against Northeast. The Rebels defeated the host Wildcats 7-3 in Saturday’s nightcap.
“I am excited to start us off our playoff run this way,” Dobek said. “If we keep playing the way we did today, I think we will get pretty far. This whole season, different guys have stepped up. I am glad that I was able to be that one today.”
The upperclassmen contributed as well in the high-scoring assault.
Senior Willie Argo drove in three runs with a double and home run, junior Jake McAllister hit a two-run home run in the fifth to cap the Knights’ scoring, and senior Mike Furlong also had a multi-RBI game while batting leadoff.
The Knights finished with seven doubles and three home runs in their 15-hit attack.
Junior pitcher Jared McIntosh improved his record to
7-0 as he held the Indians to one hit and three baserunners. Using a fastball clocked at 85 mph, McIntosh struck out nine in four innings before freshman Sean Fuller struck out the side in the fifth to close out the victory.
“It felt good out there. The weather was hot, and my arm was ready to go,” McIntosh said. “I was able to keep my fastball down, and my curveball worked well. If we continue to pitch and hit like we did today, I think we should be able to have some great success this postseason.”
Northeast 7, Durant-Bennett 3Knocked out of the playoffs in the first round in 2007, Northeast coach Jeff Howe said he was “really happy” to start the 2008 postseason with a victory.
“We have got awful tough draws in past years,” he said. “I am really happy to win this one, even though it means we go on to play Assumption. We might have an idea what the result will be Tuesday but we want to play the best.”
Rebels pitcher Jordan Howe allowed no earned runs while striking out seven.
Northeast opened the game up with a three-run fifth inning with the help of an error and a balk.
