The Davenport West Falcons beat the Davenport North Wildcats 3-1 Monday to advance to the Class 4A regional finals on the strength of timely defensive plays and pitching from senior Jamie Davis.
Although she walked 10, Davis held the Wildcats to five hits and one run over six innings.
She was pitching just her second game since pulling a hamstring two weeks ago.
West coach Steve Saladino said Davis was not able to find her groove.
“She’s a heck of a competitor and a heck of an athlete,” Saladino said. “I had total confidence in her.”
Trailing 3-1, North nearly made a comeback in the bottom of the seventh, when Davis walked the first two batters she faced.
She was relieved by Caitlin Nichol, who gave up a single to Jaden Swain, loading the bases with nobody out.
The Falcons’ defense came through, though, and they held on for the win. Ashley Wailand hit a sharp ground ball to third baseman Shyanne Saladino who threw home to get the force for the first out. Paige Almasi followed with a line drive to center fielder Stephanie Dotson.
Dotson made the catch and threw to second to double off Swain for the final out.
North scored its lone run in the fifth inning.
Carissa Coopman led off beating out an infield single, and after being sacrificed to second base by Samantha Colter, scored on a single by Nicole Woodson.
Wailand, coming off a 17-strikeout outing on Saturday, took the loss.
She ran into trouble in the first inning allowing a two-out walk to Samantha Saladino.
Davis and Christine Stock followed with singles to score Saladino and give West the 1-0 lead.
The Falcons added to their lead when Nichol led off the West third with a double and Saladino followed with a single.
Stock lined out to Wailand, who attempted to double Nichol off third base, but the throw was wild allowing her to score.
Saladino advanced to third on the play and scored on a wild pitch to the next batter.
Wailand finished the game without running into trouble after that.
“Wailand is a great pitcher,” Steve Saladino said. “It’s discipline laying off that high pitch.”
He said they lost that discipline later in the game, as they failed to score again.
West will host the winner of the game between Bettendorf and North Scott at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
