Davenport’s move back to the 100,000 population mark slowed last year, according to new

census figures.

The city gained 94 people, according to U.S. Census Bureau estimates, which are being released today. The city’s population as of last July was 98,975.

The previous year, the city had gained an estimated 578 people.

Davenport last exceeded the 100,000 population mark in the 1980 Census. Since 2000, Davenport has gained 616 people, the government says.

The government uses birth, death and migration figures to come up with county population estimates between the 10-year censuses. Then — as it is doing today — it distributes those people to cities using a housing unit formula.

Bettendorf continued to grow apace, gaining 267 people between 2006 and 2007, for a population of 32,445. Its population has increased 1,187 since 2000.

Eldridge continued to experience relatively strong growth for the county, gaining 220 people last year and 651 since 2000. It had a population of 4,816 last year.

In Illinois, Moline’s population was 43,016 in 2007. That was 420 people more than the year before, according to the

estimates.

The Census Bureau said population last year increased in Rock Island County for the first time in years. Moline is being credited with about half of that growth. Its population since 2000, however, is still down 1,009 people.

Rock Island’s population was 38,243 last year, up 73 from the year before but down 1,489 since 2000. East Moline grew 63 people between 2006 and 2007 to 21,073. That’s 455 people fewer than 2000, according to the

estimates.

A new actual count of the nation’s population, which is done every 10 years, is still two years away.
