TIPTON, Iowa — Tipton schools’ insurance company approved paying $8,600 to repair windows at the elementary and middle schools that were broken by vandals.

Superintendent Dick Grimoskas told the school board this week that four juveniles have been apprehended, and a fifth was a witness. “One is still a student here,” he said. “He would have been a junior next year.”

Grimoskas said 26 windows were broken June 16 with BB guns. Custodian Larry Laing reported the damage when he went to work. Some windows had been shot numerous times.

Roger Hakeman, Tipton police chief, said the investigation is continuing to determine whether more people are involved. He said charges are pending against at least four male juveniles, ages 15 to 17, one of whom has since turned 18. The school had the most damage, but more than 40 complaints of car and building window vandalism were filed from June 16 through July 5.
