DES MOINES — Iowa Gov. Chet Culver on Friday stopped short of predicting an easy Iowa victory for presumptive Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama this November.

Despite Obama’s victory in Iowa’s leadoff caucuses on Jan. 3, Culver said his likely Republican opponent, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, will run a tough campaign.

“It comes down to those two individuals. The two candidates have to go out there and win the race, and that means they have to perform well in debates and that means they have to put everything they have into getting across the finish line first,” said Culver, speaking during a taping of Iowa Press.

McCain finished fourth in Iowa’s Republican caucuses.

Culver pledged to do anything he can to help Obama win the White House and said the Illinois senator is the right candidate for the job.

“I think he will lead our country forward,” he said. “I think it’s time for a change in Washington. Politics as usual just is not working.”
