CLINTON, Iowa — A 25-year-old Clinton man is charged with attempted murder after he allegedly stabbed his girlfriend in the throat Saturday and told police voices in a song he was listening to told him the woman was Satan and must be killed.

According to an affidavit filed by Clinton police, officers responded to 514 10th Ave. South at 7:20 p.m. Saturday. They found a woman had suffered a stab wound to her back and throat. She was taken to Mercy Medical Center, Clinton, for treatment.

Robert J. Ewing allegedly told officers that voices in a song he listened to told him that the woman was Satan and that he was instructed to kill the woman. He stabbed the woman in the back and then in the throat.

Ewing allegedly told police that the music stated “it was my duty to kill her.”

The woman said she fell from the couch to the living room floor and started screaming. Ewing allegedly jumped on top of the woman and asked her if she wanted to “die screaming or die quietly?”

Ewing allegedly tried to treat the woman’s wounds, the affidavit states, but he ended up calling for help after about two hours.

Ewing allegedly told police he suffers from schizophrenia and had taken Methadone in an attempt to kill himself. Ewing was treated at Mercy Medical Center and then released to police.

The relationship between Ewing and the woman was not disclosed by police.

Attempted murder is a Class B felony under Iowa law that carries a prison sentence of up to 25 years.
