DES MOINES – No. 2-ranked Davenport Assumption broke open a close game with four runs in the sixth inning on its way to a 7-0 win over St. Ansgar in the semifinals of the Class 2A state baseball tournament Thursday at Principal Park.
Jared McIntosh fired a one-hitter and struck out 11 as the Knights posted their second straight shutout at state. The start of the game was delayed 15 minutes after heavy early-morning rains.
Assumption scored in the top of the fourth inning on a one-out double by Jake McAllister, a groundout and an RBI single by McIntosh.
The Knights then added four runs in the sixth as a lead-off walk to Willie Argo, a single by McAllister, a sacrifice bunt by Ryan Byrne and a walk to McIntosh loaded the bases with one out. A bases-loaded walk to Ben Bush scored a run, as did a fielder’s choice groundout for a 3-0 lead. Mike Furlong then laced a two-out, two-run single for a 5-0 lead.
McAllister slugged a solo home run and Bush added an RBI double in the seventh.
Assumption (34-8) advances to the 2A title game on Saturday afternoon against the winner of Thursday’s other semifinal between Solon and Cherokee.
