The Quad-Cities isn’t the only community struggling to improve police shooting investigation guidelines. Here are other examples. Find links for more details about these in this editorial online at qctimes.com/opinion.

New York City

Police involved in shootings are required to undergo alcohol tests after firing a weapon in the line of duty. Bills in the state legislature would require drug and alcohol testing of officers within three hours of a shooting. Another would require investigations to be recorded.

Denver

A Firearms Discharge Review Board comprised of police division chiefs reviews the investigation to determine accountability,  and also to refine police response techniques. The city  this month published a 143 page study that revises police shooting policies.

Chicago

A Tribune series on police shooting investigations shows lax oversight of investigations.

Fairfax County, Va.
