MORRISON, Ill. — Whiteside County Sheriff Roger Schipper told the county board this week he plans to retire in September and appoint Lt. Kelly Wilhelmi to finish the two years remaining in his term.
Schipper, who has been sheriff for 18 years, said he had been considering retirement for about two years. He said he is confident he will leave the department in good hands under the direction of Wilhelmi, who currently serves as administrator of the Whiteside County Jail and has been with the sheriff’s department for 20 years.
“We have really good people here,” Schipper said.
Schipper said he is proud of several programs the department has initiated under his leadership, including bringing a chaplain to the jail three times a week, using grant money to equip patrol cars with cameras and the formation of an emergency response team.
“We’ve tried to stay very proactive,” Schipper said.
Wilhelmi, 47, said he was surprised when Schipper asked him earlier this year if he would be interested in taking over the job.
“I was pretty honored that he felt I was capable of taking over the job,” Wilhelmi said.
Wilhelmi said he plans to run for a new term as sheriff in 2010 and will continue Schipper’s progressive approach to the position.
Tony Arduini, chairman of the Whiteside County Board, said Schipper had done an excellent job as sheriff.
