CAMANCHE, Iowa  — The family of a snowmobiler who drowned in the Mississippi River in January has donated a water search device to the local volunteer fire department.

Kurt Spies drowned while water skipping, or riding a snowmobile on water, on Jan. 27. It took two days for authorities to locate Spies’ body.

Spies’ family decided to use some of the memorial donations they received to give back to the agencies that had worked to locate his body. The family donated the searching device to the Camanche volunteer fire department

Officials say the system will greatly enhance the fire department’s ability to perform water searches.
