CORDOVA, Ill. — A 61-year-old bicyclist was killed Thursday morning in rural Rock Island County near Cordova after he was hit by a vehicle that then fled the scene, Illinois State Police said.

The collision occurred about 10:39 a.m. at the intersection of 150th Avenue North and 291st Street North. The cyclist, whose name was not released late Thursday, sustained massive head injuries and died at the scene, Illinois State Police spokesman Sgt. Tom Burek said in a news release.

The road surface at the accident site on 150th Avenue showed tire marks that swerved in the direction of 291st Street, which leads to Albany, Ill.

Augustin Barragan, 55, of Savanna, Ill., was arrested later in the day and charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash. He was being held Thursday night in the Rock Island County Jail.

Though the accident is being categorized a hit-and-run, Burek said there is no indication the driver purposely hit the cyclist.

For several miles of 150th Avenue, leading to the accident scene, there is only a grassy shoulder or no shoulder at all on the two-lane road. Both car and bicycle were traveling eastbound.

The accident scene is about 30 miles northeast of the Quad-Cities.
