Iowa City to seek buyout of 245 flooded homes

IOWA CITY — Iowa City is moving forward with a plan to seek a buyout for each of the 245 homes that were damaged in June’s record flooding.
City council members, during a work session on Monday, say while only so much federal money will be available, it’s best to give everyone a shot at a buyout.
Buyouts are voluntary, and residents who are not interested won’t have to participate.
The homes will be included in a notice the city will submit to the state by Sept. 12. The process will involve the Federal Emergency Management Agency and will take at least several months.
Competition for FEMA money is expected to tight with severe weather and flooding causing significant damage throughout Iowa this spring and summer.
