MAQUOKETA, Iowa — Maquoketa Community School Board members sold nearly two acres of land adjacent to the school’s new gymnasium to Clinton Community College for $1.

The new satellite campus will be built at South 5th Street and Washington Street at the edge of the Maquoketa High School campus.

Clinton Community College board members are scheduled to approve the land sale at their meeting next week. Bids for the project may also be reviewed.

A referendum passed last fall funded several building projects for Eastern Iowa Community College,  including the satellite campus in Maquoketa.

One provision of the sale agreement notes that if Clinton Community College ever decides to close the campus and sell the land, Maquoketa School District has the first option on it.

“I hope it will be a successful project and will serve Maquoketa students well,” Superintendent Kim Huckstadt said.

CCC President Karen Vickers attended the Maquoketa board meeting this week where the sale was approved, but joked she forgot to bring the $1. Plans call for groundbreaking in September, with classes starting next fall.

The two education groups already are working together. This week, an agreement was worked out where Clinton Community College is providing a welding instructor for the high school. Maquoketa’s long-time welding instructor retired in May. The college hired Craig Burken of Clinton, who operates a welding business, to teach the classes. Maquoketa’s share of his salary will be $19,380. Burken may also teach night classes for the college at the high school welding classroom.
