IOWA CITY — A former inmate is suing the state and eight prison employees, claiming he wasn’t properly treated when another prisoner broke his jaw.
Scott William Rexford says in his lawsuit that after an inmate punched him and broke his jaw in December 2006, staff at the Iowa Medical Classification Center at Oakdale incorrectly concluded his jaw wasn’t broken. He later was placed in solitary confinement despite severe pain and an inability to eat.
Several days later, he was examined at University Hospitals and underwent surgery for a broken jaw. The lawsuit claims that after surgery, staff didn’t provide Rexford with a proper liquid diet.
Deputy warden Greg Ort had no comment.
Rexford was in prison on a marijuana conviction and was later paroled.
