Man arrested, charged with assaulting officers

MUSCATINE, Iowa — A rural Wilton, Iowa,  man was hit three times with a stun gun after alleged assaults on a police officer and two jailers.

Dennis Childers, 45, of 1382 Iowa Highway 38, was stunned first by Atalissa Police Chief Dustin Brooks, who responded to a domestic disturbance at Childers’ home about

9 p.m. Monday.

According to court documents, Childers threatened Brooks and swung a large mallet as he moved closer to him. Childers was shot with the stun gun after refusing to obey orders from the officer.

Childers was stunned twice more at the Muscatine County Jail after he became “agitated and physically combative” with jailers who removed his cigarettes while searching him, court documents state. Childers was restrained on the ground during an altercation in which he kicked one jailer in the chest and left another with a 2-inch cut on his forearm.

He was charged with assault on a police officer with a deadly weapon, a Class D felony; aggravated misdemeanor charges of interference with official acts causing injury, assault on a jail officer, assault on a jail officer causing injury and interference with official acts.

He was being held Wednesday in the Muscatine County Jail on a $50,000 cash-only bond after an initial court appearance Tuesday.  A Class D felony is punishable by up to five years in prison and a $7,500 fine.
